How to read casino bonus terms
We do not list bonus offers on this site, because they change faster than any published table can stay honest. What we can do is teach you to read one in ninety seconds — which is more useful than any list, because the offer you are looking at is the one that matters.
The one number that decides everything: wagering
A wagering requirement (sometimes "playthrough") is how many times you must re-stake a bonus before its winnings become withdrawable cash. A £10 bonus at 10x wagering means £100 of stakes before you can take anything out. This single number determines whether an offer is generous or a treadmill, and it is usually in the small print rather than the headline.
The good news for British players: since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission caps wagering requirements at ten times the bonus value for all UK-licensed operators. The 40x and 50x structures that used to be routine are no longer lawful here. If you see a UK-facing offer above 10x, that is a red flag about the whole operation — check the operator on the Commission's register before going anywhere near it.
Game weighting: not every pound counts
Most bonuses count slot stakes at 100% towards wagering, but table games and live casino often count at 10%, 5% or nothing at all. If you are a blackjack player, a "casino bonus" that weights blackjack at zero is not a bonus for you — it is an incentive to play games you did not come for. The weighting table is always in the promotion terms; find it before you deposit, not after.
Expiry windows
Bonuses die. Seven days is common, and some free-spin offers expire in 24 hours. An offer you cannot realistically clear inside its window at stakes you are comfortable with is not an offer — it is a deadline pressuring you to play faster than you planned. That pressure is precisely the behaviour the recent UK reforms were designed to curb, and it is worth resisting on principle.
The rest of the small print worth finding
- Maximum bet while wagering. Many bonuses cap your stake (often a few pounds) while a bonus is active. Exceeding it can void the bonus and its winnings.
- Maximum win or conversion cap. Some offers cap what a bonus can ever pay out, no matter what you hit during wagering.
- Payment method exclusions. Historically some offers excluded certain deposit routes. Check the eligibility line rather than assuming.
- Single product only. Since January 2026, a UK promotion cannot bundle casino with sports betting or other products. An offer that requires you to bet on football to unlock casino spins is no longer permitted here.
A worked example
Suppose a casino offers "£20 bonus when you deposit £20", 10x wagering, slots weighted 100%, seven-day expiry, £5 maximum stake during wagering. The honest translation: you must place £200 in slot stakes within a week, in increments of £5 or less, before bonus winnings become real. At £2 average spins that is roughly a hundred spins — achievable for a regular player, meaningless if you planned one short session. Neither answer is wrong; the point is to know which player you are before accepting.
